As he navigates this quirky and occasionally hilarious subculture populated by brilliant eccentrics, Stone pulls back the curtain on a community shrouded in secrecy, fueled by obsession and brilliance, and organized around one overriding need: to prove one’s worth by deceiving others. But his journey is more than a tale of tricks, gigs, and geeks. By investing some of the lesser-known corners of psychology, neuroscience, physics, history, and even crime, all through the lens of trickery and illusion, Fooling Houdini arrives at a host of startling revelations about how the mind works--and why, sometimes, it doesn’t.

Mathematics education research has blossomed into many different areas, which we can see in the programmes of the ICME conferences, as well as in the various survey articles in the Handbooks. However, all of these lines of research are trying to grapple with the complexity of the same process of learning mathematics. Although our knowledge of the process is through fragmentation of research more extensive and deeper there is a need to overcome this fragmentation and to see learning as one process with different aspects. To overcome this fragmentation, this book identifies six themes: (1) mathematics, culture and society, (2) the structure of mathematics and its influence on the learning process, (3) mathematics learning as a cognitive process, (4) mathematics learning as a social process, (5) affective conditions of the mathematics learning process, (6) new technologies and mathematics learning. This book is addressed to all researchers in mathematic education. It gives an orientation and overview on what is going on and what are the main results and questions what are important books or papers if further information is needed.

An old favorite--Mensa Math & Logic Puzzles--gets a brand-new look: it's now in color! And the puzzles are fantastic: they're the kind of challenge found at the World Puzzle Championships, and they require no language to solve. For example, you are given a grid of dots that has some numbers (0, 1, 2, or 3) in them. You need to connect the dots in one continuous path so that each number is surrounded by that many lines. So a |3| means that three of the four sides around it must be connected. All the puzzles are similar abstract exercises, and all have unique solutions that can be reached using pure logic. They're difficult--and really satisfying exercise for your brain.

An international group of distinguished scholars brings a variety of resources to bear on the major issues in the study and teaching of mathematics, and on the problem of understanding mathematics as a cultural and social phenomenon. All are guided by the notion that our understanding of mathematical knowledge must be grounded in and reflect the realities of mathematical practice. Chapters on the philosophy of mathematics illustrate the growing influence of a pragmatic view in a field traditionally dominated by platonic perspectives. In a section on mathematics, politics, and pedagogy, the emphasis is on politics and values in mathematics education. Issues addressed include gender and mathematics, applied mathematics and social concerns, and the reflective and dialogical nature of mathematical knowledge. The concluding section deals with the history and sociology of mathematics, and with mathematics and social change. Contributors include Philip J. Davis, Helga Jungwirth, Nel Noddings, Yehuda Rav, Michael D. Resnik, Ole Skovsmose, and Thomas Tymoczko.

Lectures on Universal Teichmüller Space
By:Armen Sergeev
Published on 2014 by Erich Schmidt Verlag GmbH & Co. KG

( DOWNLOAD NOW )

This book is based on a lecture course given by the author at the Educational Center of the Steklov Mathematical Institute in 2011. It is designed for a one-semester course for undergraduate students familiar with basic differential geometry and complex and functional analysis. The universal Teichmüller space T is the quotient of the space of quasisymmetric homeomorphisms of the unit circle modulo Möbius transformations. The first part of the book is devoted to the study of geometric and analytic properties of T. It is an infinite-dimensional Kähler manifold which contains all classical Teichmüller spaces of compact Riemann surfaces as complex submanifolds, which explains the name |universal Teichmüller space|. Apart from classical Teichmüller spaces, T contains the space S of diffeomorphisms of the circle modulo Möbius transformations. The latter space plays an important role in the quantization of the theory of smooth strings. The quantization of T is presented in the second part of the book. In contrast with the case of diffeomorphism space S, which can be quantized in frames of the conventional Dirac scheme, the quantization of T requires an absolutely different approach based on the noncommutative geometry methods. The book concludes with a list of 24 problems and exercises which can used to prepare for examinations.
