By:Evan Chen
Published on 2016-05-02 by The Mathematical Association of America

( DOWNLOAD NOW )

This is a challenging problem-solving book in Euclidean geometry, assuming nothing of the reader other than a good deal of courage. Topics covered included cyclic quadrilaterals, power of a point, homothety, triangle centers; along the way the reader will meet such classical gems as the nine-point circle, the Simson line, the symmedian and the mixtilinear incircle, as well as the theorems of Euler, Ceva, Menelaus, and Pascal. Another part is dedicated to the use of complex numbers and barycentric coordinates, granting the reader both a traditional and computational viewpoint of the material. The final part consists of some more advanced topics, such as inversion in the plane, the cross ratio and projective transformations, and the theory of the complete quadrilateral. The exposition is friendly and relaxed, and accompanied by over 300 beautifully drawn figures. The emphasis of this book is placed squarely on the problems. Each chapter contains carefully chosen worked examples, which explain not only the solutions to the problems but also describe in close detail how one would invent the solution to begin with. The text contains as selection of 300 practice problems of varying difficulty from contests around the world, with extensive hints and selected solutions. This book is especially suitable for students preparing for national or international mathematical olympiads, or for teachers looking for a text for an honor class.

Teach math lessons through the creative means of a life storyProvide 36 weeks of instruction based on skill levels rather than grade levelsGuide students by the use of inexpensive manipulatives, including index cards, dried beans, and construction paper! We often tend to compartmentalize when teaching children. In real life, there aren’t artificial barriers between “subjects.” For example, when you are cooking or baking, you have to use the skills of reading, logical thinking, and measuring, just to name a few. In driving a car, you see and read road signs, read maps, and count miles. So why do we say to children, “This is math, this is language, this is about science and nature, and this is history”? The most natural and effective means to teach children is through life examples. Content, story, and the ability to show math in real life make a living math book!

Lectures on Universal Teichmüller Space
By:Armen Sergeev
Published on 2014 by Erich Schmidt Verlag GmbH & Co. KG

( DOWNLOAD NOW )

This book is based on a lecture course given by the author at the Educational Center of the Steklov Mathematical Institute in 2011. It is designed for a one-semester course for undergraduate students familiar with basic differential geometry and complex and functional analysis. The universal Teichmüller space T is the quotient of the space of quasisymmetric homeomorphisms of the unit circle modulo Möbius transformations. The first part of the book is devoted to the study of geometric and analytic properties of T. It is an infinite-dimensional Kähler manifold which contains all classical Teichmüller spaces of compact Riemann surfaces as complex submanifolds, which explains the name |universal Teichmüller space|. Apart from classical Teichmüller spaces, T contains the space S of diffeomorphisms of the circle modulo Möbius transformations. The latter space plays an important role in the quantization of the theory of smooth strings. The quantization of T is presented in the second part of the book. In contrast with the case of diffeomorphism space S, which can be quantized in frames of the conventional Dirac scheme, the quantization of T requires an absolutely different approach based on the noncommutative geometry methods. The book concludes with a list of 24 problems and exercises which can used to prepare for examinations.

In this important book for pre- and in-service teachers, early math experts Douglas Clements and Julie Sarama show how |learning trajectories| help diagnose a child’s level of mathematical understanding and provide guidance for teaching. By focusing on the inherent delight and curiosity behind young children’s mathematical reasoning, learning trajectories ultimately make teaching more joyous. They help teachers understand the varying levels of knowledge exhibited by individual students, which in turn allows them to better meet the learning needs of all children. Using straightforward, no-nonsense language, this book summarizes the current research about how children learn mathematics, and how to build on what children already know to realize more effective teaching. This second edition of Learning and Teaching Early Math remains the definitive, research-based resource to help teachers understand the learning trajectories of early mathematics and become quintessential professionals. Updates to the new edition include: • Explicit connections between Learning Trajectories and the new Common Core State Standards. • New coverage of patterns and patterning. • Incorporation of hundreds of recent research studies.
